Study Finds Physical Evidence Associated With Transsexuality
The researchers who performed post-mortem examinations of a number of human brains counted the number of neurons in the BSTc. In both biological sexes transsexuals had the appropriate number of neurons for a person of the opposite sex. The number of neurons present in transsexuals as compared to sex was independent of hormone levels. The pattern was not only seen in transsexuals who had sex changes, but also in transsexuals who wished they had undergone hormone replacement therapy and reassignment surgery, but never did. In addition, non-transsexuals exposed to those same hormones for unrelated medical reasons did not show an abnormal shift in the number of neurons.
The research lead by Kruijver has a number of implications. Whereas the psychiatric community largely regards transsexuality as a disorder in which one's gender identity runs counter to one's birth sex, the evidence suggests that this juxtaposition of the structure of the brain as compared to the body, and thus transsexuality, is part of the natural human condition and not a disorder at all. The research also suggests that despite the tremendous indoctrination imposed by society to force fit an individual into a prescribed gender role/identity, a simple phsycial attribute is telling that individual that no, he/she is not what society preceives them as being. In fact the individual is a member of the opposite sex.
Transsexuals, who are often critical of psychiatry that tries to understand the "pathology" behind transsexuality, are now empowered to leverage this new research to dismiss the myths that what they feel is the result of a delusion. On the contrary this new research demonstrates that transsexuals are actually born into bodies of the opposite sex of what they really are.
